A small kit plane began sputtering after takeoff and crashed near the runway at Pearson Air Field in Vancouver just after 4:00 this afternoon. A passenger was killed and the pilot, Hannibal Woodward is said to be critically injured.
Witnesses say the Kitfox IV fixed-wing aircraft got a few hundred feet into the air and Woodward tried to turn back, but it was coming in too steep. The impact flattened the aircraft, snapping off the wings and scattering debris at the west end of the airport.
