In a five vehicle crash east of Albany on highway 20, an ODOT employee rescued a man. After 21-year old John Olson failed to brake in time towing a flat bed with hay, 54-year old Dean Stilwell in a 1970 Chevy pickup was sent across the westbound lane of traffic and into a pond where the vehicle was completely submerged. Three other vehicles were involved in the crash. 47-year old Troy Elverfeld saw smoke from the crash site and went to the scene. Elverfeld saw Stilwell trapped in the submerged pickup, then attempted to rescue him unsuccessfully several times, until finally he took a rod and broke the window and pulled him to safety. Five were transported to Albany General Hospital, including a two-year old boy. Olson was cited by Oregon State Police for Careless Driving. Highway 20 was shutdown in both directions for 45 minutes.
