Solo Climber Dies On Mt Hood

A solo climber fell from the 10,000 foot level of Mt Hood Thursday morning and died from his injuries. Calls to 9-1-1 came in about 5:20 a.m. saying a climber had fallen about 1,000 feet. The caller said the climber was on the standard climbing route and landed on the west side of the
Hogsback near Crater Rock. Other climbers that witnessed the fall made their way to
the person and rendered assistance.
Clackamas County Sheriff's Office initiated a Search and
Rescue operation and was assisted by the AMR RAT team, Portland Mountain
Rescue, and Mountain Wave Communications. 56-year-old Mark Cartier of Portland was found dead from his injuries about an hour later. His name and age have not been released.
