Peter Jacobson breaks down The U.S. Open

The U.S Open kicks off today at the Olympic Golf Club in San Francisco. Chad had Portland native Peter Jacobsen on The Morning Sports Page Thursday previewing the tournament.

One of the top stories heading into the weekend is the grouping of Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Bubba Watson. Chad asked him what he expects from the grouping and he maintained that although that grouping will probably command the largest audience, it’s probably not as big of a deal as the media is making it out to be. Having said that, Jacobsen said he does expect Woods to have a pretty good outing this weekend. He may not win, but his recent performances lead him to believe that Woods will be in the conversation.

Chad also made sure to ask Jacobsen about Oregon Duck Golf Coach Casey Martin and what he expects from him this weekend. Jacobsen said he has great respect for Martin – he actually considers him his person hero for what he’s been able to accomplish with such adversity. Jacobsen also said not to count him out just because he’s been away from the tour for awhile. Martin can hit the ball as far as anyone on tour, he has a terrific short game, and he has a great attitude and work ethic. He expects Martin to make the cut and be there at the end of the weekend.

Jacobsen tugged at the heart strings a bit when he mentioned his favorite Open moments. As he was a good friend of Payne Stewart, Jacobsen claimed his favorite memory was when Payne beat Phil Mickelson at Pinehurst in 1999. The victory came about three months before Stewart was killed in an airplane crash.

And we couldn’t let Jacobsen out before getting an expert’s pick to win the tournament. Although the tournament really is anyone’s to win, Jacobsen said he thinks the Olympic club sets up very nicely for Lee Westwood of England. He’s hungry, he’s one of the greatest players to never win a major, and he said he could see the Open being Westwood’s coming out party.
