Google Map locating Dome Rock in Oregon

June 11, 2012, 9:19 am

Search crews had to rescue 2 different hiking groups Sunday and Monday morning. It started with a day hike for a group of 4 hikers who texted a friend just before 8pm and said they were lost in the Willamette National Forest near Dome Rock. Searchers found them safe around 9:30pm.

A second group called for help around 7:45p Sunday. The woman said they were lost in the hills near Opal Creek. The area is near Detroit Lake. The battery on her cell phone was weak and communications were spotty throughout the night.  The terrain in the area also creates communication issues. The two men and a woman ended up spending the night in a sleeping bag. They reported being high on a ridge, near a rock face, but otherwise they weren't able to pinpoint their locations.  Searchers were unable to use GPS technology to locate them because of coverage issues.

24 searchers resumed looking this morning after a call from the group. They were located by a helicopter around 8:15am Monday. An airlift was not possible, so searchers where directed to the group so they could hike out. All three were reported to be in good condition.

As summer approaches, hikers are reminded to properly prepare for their hike.  Even if you are not planning to spend the night in the wilderness, you should prepare as though you were.  Survival equipment, including food & water, shelter, a fire starter, extra clothing, a map and a cell phone are bare necessities.  Be sure to let someone know where you're hiking and when you plan to return.  Notify someone if you deviate from your original plan.
