June 5, 2013, 11:40 am
Former Daytona 500 winning crew chief and current TNT NASCAR
analyst Larry McReynolds
joined John Canzano on The Bald Faced Truth to discuss his career in Nascar and his latest role as an analyst for NASCAR.
is one of the most revered crew chiefs in the history of NASCAR and he took a moment to talk about what a crew chief is and how he became one, “The crew chief is pretty much like the head football coach. He’s the one making the calls and making sure everyone’s moving in the right direction.”
McReynolds continued, “On race day his duties fall upon when to pit, when not to pit, whether you need to change two tires or four…and the way I became a crew chief was really no different than the way a head football coach becomes a head football coach, you work your way up the ranks.”
McReynolds also talked about Christmas Abbott who is the first female pit crew member and addressed the talk that she’s just a NASCAR novelty, “Anytime you can have a novelty in any sport and a novelty in most sports would be a female athlete, it certainly was the attraction of Danica Patrick racing in the NASCAR Sprint Cup series. But regardless if you’re a driver like Danica Patrick or a tire changer like Christmas Abbott, you have to have talent, you have to have ability.”
McReynolds added, “I’ve never met Christmas, but what I’ve been told and what I’ve heard is she’s very good at what she does and she works very hard at what she does.”
