Guests at a Southeast Portland motel got an unwelcome early morning wake-up call. Terry Mortensen was wanted for violating parole in two states and didn't want to go back to jail.
Police were checking motels for offenders and found the 57-year-old fugitive at the Motel 6 at 31st and Powell. What followed was a standoff that lasted four hours.
An explosive charge blew the door open so police could see inside. Mortensen was starting to light the room on fire. He threw knives and hatchets at police. Officers arrested him as he tried to escape through a window. He was treated for cuts and burns.
The guests who were kept out of their rooms huddled in a bus and were fed breakfast from the McDonald's across the street.
Mortensen was on parole in Washington for a 2003 assault, and in Nevada for murder in 1977. He'll be extradited back to Nevada. Here in Multnomah County, he's facing new charges of arson and criminal mischief.
