Spring football is under way down in Eugene as the Ducks try to figure out life without Kenjon Barner and Dion Jordan. Ducks Head Coach Mark Helfrich joined Chad on Flight 750 Thursday to talk about the team's hopes for the Spring.
Helfrich discussed Marcus Mariota and his increased leadership role.
“Marcus all along has been a guy that speaks softly and carries a big stick. – Very humble, almost to a fault – Working through some of that unnaturalness in his personality has been tough but he has done a great job this Spring.”
He also talked about one of the studs in the defensive secondary, Ifo Ekpre Olomu.
“He is a special guy, a tough guy - Another guy that has really stepped into a leadership role. He’s one of those guys that he’s just kind of a ball hawk. He’s a guy that just shows up around the ball whether it’s his face on the ball forcing a fumble or picking it himself. And if we’re in Special Teams, he just always sniffed out the ball.”
And finally Helfrich talked about his favorite part of coaching.
“That’s why this is such a great job for us, just those personal relationships. Obviously we like to compete on Saturdays but being around these guys that work their tails off and have fun doing it. And that’s where you’re able to have that fine line of everybody all in it together, working really hard, and having a lot of fun. That’s what its all about.”
