In a feisty match between the Timbers and Earthquakes, a Will Johnson free kick goal proves to be the difference and Portland escapes with the 1-0 win.
Players are starting to mesh and things are beginning to click for Portland as they take their second straight victory and post their second-consecutive clean sheet.
Portland looked in control most of the game against San Jose, even with the score 0-0 at the half, controlling over 60% of possession.
Things had been chippy all game, but things boiled over in the 67th minute when an Alan Gordon elbow caught Mikael Silvestre in the mouth and forced him to leave momentarily to stop some bleeding.
Gordon, who previously picked up a yellow card earlier on a hard foul on Diego Chara, picked up his second yellow card and San Jose was forced to play man down the final 25 minutes of the game.
It didn't take long for the Timbers to capitalize on the advantage, with Will Johnson bending in a beautiful free kick in the 78th minute.
