Install The Lift Or Drain The Pool
When myself and producers Tony and Joe put content and topics together, we try to find ways to pose them as questions first. Some of them are polarizing and some of them are thought provoking. Very few of them are no brainers... Until today. Here's the question-
"Should hotels and motels be required to put handicapped lifts in their pools or else be forced to drain them?"
These are private businesses. That's the first point to be made about this. That's the plain and simple one. Beyond that, though, there are a plethora of other problems with requiring this. One caller made the excellent point that if every hotel and motel was required to do this, there wouldn't be any that were set apart from the others. For example, you could go to a Holiday Inn because they had a pool with a lift in it and you are a handicapped citizen. Your choice is easy if you wish to enjoy the pool. If you don't care, there's a local Shiloh Inn right down the street that doesn't have one. Another caller owns a local hotel in the Portland area. He says that he put a lift into his pool and it hasn't been used even ONCE.
Let me make it clear that I am in full support of providing services to our handicapped citizens. I do not, however, support forcing someone to spend money on non-essentials.
