Changes Loom Over Lottery Row

If Oregon House speaker Tina Kotek has her way, change is coming to Hayden Islands troubled "Lottery Row". The Democrat who represents the the district says "Do we want casinos? Because that's what we have now." in front of the House Business and Labor Committee. "We have retailers who pretty much, just make money from lottery," 

Kotek is sponsoring two bills aimed at dealing with the 12 troubled bars by Jantzen Beach. One bill would allow a city or police chief to shut down a bar without the OLCC's permission. House Bill 2008 says that they could only do so if an immediate threat to public safety is presented. North Precinct Commander Mike Leloff told our newspartner KGW "OLCC and us, we can't communicate because we have a very confidential investigation within a homicide and we're not able to release details and so OLCC is resistant to closing that bar down."

The speaker also is sponsoring a second bill, House Bill 2007. That would shut down any businesses that make a majority of their income based on gambling. 

All 12 businesses are at risk of losing their liquor licenses next month when they are up fro review by the OLCC. The Portland Police Bureau has recommended that all but one lose their license to serve alcohol.
