Governor John Kitzhaber joined a town hall meeting at Madison High School in Southeast Portland to talk about the master plan for education. He made a speech and answered questions from the board and citizens.  His focus was a familiar one, reinvesting in education through the savings found in his health care plan.

Kitzhaber siad “And if as I believe that at the heart of the American dream is opportunity, the promise of upward mobility, the promise that hard work gets rewarded and you can actually leave your kids off better off then you were… Then public education is the vehice through which that promise is most directly fullfilled today”

Kitzhaber says the plan to restore and revitalize schools is a big one, and won't be accomplished over night. He says it could take up to eight years to finish the job.

“I think you do need to recognize that this isn’t going to be easy. The co-chairs budget calls for about $275 million in new revenues, which I’m very supportive of. But that does require a super majority” Kitzhaber said.

He also mentioned the immediate goal now is to stop the hemorrhaging of teachers and school days.
