The Oregonian reports that almost a third of
Portland Police officers made more than $100,000 last year. Mayor Charlie Hales, who is dealing with a deficit of almost $25 million as he draws up a new budget, has asked Commissioners Amanda Fritz and Dan Saltzman to dig deep into those numbers.
Sergeant Pete Simpson says there were some unanticipated needs for personnel with events such as Occupy Portland and gang shootings. Overtime expenses for 2011-12 totaled $11.6 million.
City Council hopes to find ways to reduce police overtime by the end of the month.
