I used to think those people who crammed onto a street in downtown Portland or any other city to participate in a run were crazy. I wondered what motivated them. It seemed silly. ...until I tried it myself. There's something to be said about the commoradarie of people who get together to do something healthy. It's actually fun to get moving early. It's great to hear people cheer as you start the race. When you feel like you can't push through, the people around you inspire you with their energy. I saw one person fall during the Shamrock Run and so many people stopped to help her out, it was inspiring. At the last leg, when your legs feel heavy and you just want to walk it, people line up to cheer you on and tell you you're almost there. You feel kind of like a rock star. After you're done, you feel you've accomplished so much and it's usually only about 10am. Usually, you want to hang out and enjoy a beer or some chowder (yes..I said it was only 10am) because the people are all in a good mood. It's hard to find someone who's crabby after a good workout. Then, the rest of the day is yours.
To all you crazy runners out there, here's to a great running season.
