Yells for help brought two strangers to the aid of a mother and daughter in Gresham Saturday afternoon. Police say a man forced the women into their apartment at 1212 NE Linden and threatened to kill them.
While the man was ransacking the apartment, Tonja Valderas and her 12-year-old daughter were able to call 9-1-1 for help. The man then turned on the two women and started beating them.
Their screams were heard by Michael Lieberman, who lives at the apartment complex, and Chauncey Brown, who happened to be near the apartments, who came running. Brown and Lieberman subdued the attacker, who lost consciousness during the struggle.
The attacker was taken to Mt. Hood Medical where he remains in critical condition. His identity remains unknown to any of the persons involved and police have not been able to identify him.
