Oregon Students Required to Learn CPR

Students, first responders and the American Heart Organization are in Salem Thursday at 1:00PM to testify in front of the Senate Education Committee on SB275. That bill would have every Oregon student trained to give CPR before they graduate high school. Tualatin Valley Fire and Rescue are backers of the bill, and have trained students at Valley Catholic Middle School in how to give the life saving action. 

"In TVF&R's service area, cardiac survival rates exceed the national average, ranging between 11% and 23% for the past several years. Fire Chief Mike Duyck states, "I attribute this, not only to our department's investment in paramedics and advanced cardiac drugs and equipment on every unit, but our community's demonstrated willingness to perform hands-only CPR during a cardiac event." Duyck added, "Passing SB275 will bring more than 45,000 trained lifesavers to our community every year."

300,000 people suffer cardiac arrest, and many die before they reach the hospital. Those die typically from not receiving CPR in a timely manner. According to TVF&R a patients chances of surviving sudden cardiac arrest doubles when CPR is provided quickly.
