A Portland Police officer was in the hospital overnight after being injured while taking down a suspect last night. Officer John Billard was treated for two broken ribs, a bruised lung, and a head wound that needed seven staples. He'll be released today.
Two officers tried to arrest 19-year-old Frank Heselton Jr. at Southwest 12th and Columbia when they say he pulled a knife and took off. They chased after and caught up with him a few blocks away. Officers used a tazer on Heselton and tackled him. He too needed medical treatment.
Officer Billard is an 8-year veteran and assigned to the bureau's Gang Enforcement Team.
