A man goes crazy and threatens to
kill his family and shoot up police in Southeast Portland. That led to a tense
standoff with Portland Police Wednesday evening. Commuters were on their
way home while police raced to the 4400 block of Southeast 61st with
lights and sirens blaring. Portland Polices CERT Team knew they had to act
fast. 59-year old Thomas Elia was screaming "I'm going to kill
you," that he was "going to find you wherever you are and kill
you," and that he was going to "shoot it out" with the police,
according to SGT Pete Simpson. A caller to 911 said that her boyfriend had
assaulted her daughter and that her grandson and the daughter had escaped the
house. However the caller was still inside hiding from the armed boyfriend
while on the phone to dispatchers. In fear for the women's life the CERT team executed
a "hasty rescue plan". They used flash bang grenades to
distract Elia and take him into custody. The woman was found safely and was
unharmed. Simpson says he does not know why this happened but said "well
we don’t know exactly what sparked it but we received information from the
victim that he’s in the process of having a sex change, and undergoing some
hormone changes and that he's self-medicating on top of that".
