CLACKAMAS, Ore. -- 21-year-old Bryton Schmidt who went missing upstream from Carver Park on Sunday hitchhiked his way back home to Battle Ground, Washington early Monday morning.
Schmidt got separated from a friend on the Clackamas River around 9:00 at night. The friend called 911 and divers searched for Schmidt until about 11:30, but didn't find him.
The sheriff's department says he'd been drinking a lot and wasn't wearing a lifejacket.
Around 7:00 this morning as the search was resuming, several people reported seeing a man fitting Schmidt's description hitch a ride on Highway 224.
Soon after, Bryton called his parents and spoke to Clackamas County Sheriff's deputies by phone telling them he was okay and resting at home.
