Portland, Ore - 35-year old Lt. Cmdr. Landon Jones died in September when his helicopter crashed in the Red Sea. Justin Gombos, from Portland, served with Jones for three years as the two flew Navy helicopters in the sea of Japan. Upon hearing of the death of his friend, Gombos tells KXL he was devastated and he still can't believe it happened.
Using those feelings, Gombos decided to take a helicopter pilot helmet he had, and hand
it over to the art director of Guncoat Norhtwest
so it could be painted to honor Jones. The helmet is now being auctioned off, with all the money going to Jones' wife and two young sons.
Theresa Jones says the money will help her sons move forward, "I set up a trust for the boys, it's all going for them. I want to make sure they won't have to want for anything else in life and not in a materialistic kind of way. You know they've already sacrificed everything, and these people are helping to make sure they don't have to sacrifice anymore."
Jones says her 6 year old tells her all the time he want's to be in Heaven to be with his daddy, "It's hard to hear a 6 year old say he want's to die"
If you would like to bid on the helmet or help the Jones family move forward, you can contact Justin Gombos
