The
Sellwood Bridge is now closed to all traffic for one week so it can be shifted in place as part of a major $307 million reconstruction project.
Moving the steel deck about 60' north could take 16 hours. That will happen on Saturday. Part of the structure will be moved onto new supports, others demolished and access roads rebuilt.
The bridge should be open by next Thursday at 7:00am. Traffic will then cross a temporary bridge for a few years until the new permanent span is complete in the summer of 2015.
Traffic headed north should use the Ross Island Bridge to McLoughlin (99E). Southbound traffic will be detoured to McLoughlin and I-205. The speed limit on Highway 43 (Macadam) is reduced to 25 m.p.h. from Taylors Ferry Road to a half mile south of the bridge.
30,000 cars typically use the 87-year-old bridge daily. You can expect busier than usual traffic on the Ross Island, Hawthorne Bridge, and the streets around them.
