Interstate Bridge / CRC

December 7, 2011, 10:50 pm

The Columbia River Crossing's push to build a new Interstate Bridge cleared a major hurdle today with federal government approval.  The Federal Highway Administration and the U.S. Transportation Administration signed the record of decision.  This allows the project access to federal funding.  It also recognizes the project, including a new interstate transit link between Portland and Vancouver, as a preferred alternative.

Oregon Governor John Kitzhaber calls this the "final step in the planning process."  The cost is estimated at $3 Billion with a significant portion of the funding still undetermined.  Critics say the project is too expensive and won't really improve traffic flows on I-5.
