TriMet Passenger Launches Petition Drive

A TriMet passenger has launched a petition drive demanding that the transit agency and bus drivers union shorten the number of hours they they're allowed to be behind the wheel. 

This comes after an Oregonian report that some drivers work 22 hours in a 24-hour period.  It found at least 21 cases in nearly two years where people reported seeing operators fall asleep at the wheel.

Noah Heller says that's disturbing and makes it dangerous for everyone.  He plans to take the petition to TriMet's Wednesday board meeting.


TriMet's Mary Fetsch says 22 hour days do happen, but it's rare.  She claims the union won't budge in negotiations, however union official Bruce Hansen says that's not accurate.  He claims there is room for discussion on the policies and issues.  Heller says if TriMet and the union don't deal with the issue, he'll ask the state to jump in.
