After being elected to the office of Portland Mayor in November, former City Commissioner Charlie Hales was back in familiar surroundings at City Hall today to take the oath.
Hales promised to focus on spending, public safety and advocating for better public schools. He repeated his campaign promise of minimizing drama and maximizing results.
Among his plans are taking over every city bureau and sitting down with commissioners to look for ways to trim expenses. He's asked for 10% cuts and is leading by example, operating with a staff of 14, about half of what his predecessor once had.
Hales becomes the 52nd Mayor of the Rose City. He takes over leadership from the one-term Sam Adams.
